Marena’s Mill will be temporarily closed for the emergency after the flood that struck Sassoferrato and the surrounding areas.
The Mill of Marena is a characteristic and fascinating point of interest, situated on the opposite bank of the river where Sassoferrato stands.
We don’t know exactly the date when the mill was built, but surely it already existed in 1300.
The mill is located at the confluence, resulting in a large waterfall, of the Sentino river, Marena torrent and Sanguerone river (the latter recalss the old battles happened along its course – Battle of the nations 295 B.C followed by the Goths – Byzantine war later on).
The position on where the mill is situated is perfect to produce energy.
The building, beside the Mill, previously housed a cement plant and a wood shop.
The structure fell into disuse during the second World War and then 10 years ago, it was acquired and renovated by the current owner Mr. Gilberto Blasi.
Due to the renovation, the Mill recovers, beside the aesthetic and historical image, also an effective energetic function.
It was provided with two turbines of over 300kwat, able to produce a strong energetic flow that serves surrounding areas through hydropower’s clean energy.
Nowadays, on the inside, among other things, it is possible to admire a grindstone, a fulling mill and the furnace of the cement plant.
Visits can be booked at the Tourist Office, max 24 hours in advance
